How many Google reviews top-ranked financial advisors actually have

Across 100 U.S. cities, the top three Google Business Profile results for financial advisors had a median of 20.5 reviews and an average of 45.6. Listings in positions four and five averaged 18.67. Reviews are not the whole ranking, but they were the most consistent prominence signal in the set.

Key takeawaysUpdated September 2026 · Brent Carnduff
  1. 01Only 4 of the top-three listings in the study had zero reviews.
  2. 02Median in the pack: 20.5. Average: 45.6. Positions 4 and 5: 18.67.
  3. 03In 87% of cities the top three were not simply the three most-reviewed firms. Proximity and relevance still decide the shortlist.
  4. 04The most-reviewed advisor in a city ranked #1 in 28 markets and appeared in the top three in 66 of 100.
  5. 05Local results change with the searcher’s location. Treat these as a benchmark, not a promise.

What we counted

We looked at 100 U.S. cities and recorded the top three map-pack listings for financial advisors in each. For each listing we captured review count, pack position, and a few traditional SEO signals: page authority, domain authority, and whether the title tag was obviously optimized.

The question was simple: do the firms that win the pack have more reviews than the firms that sit just outside it, and do reviews beat those older SEO metrics as a correlate?

The distribution

The pack is not a wall of 200-review listings. Plenty of firms rank with a thin profile. But zero is nearly absent: four listings out of 296, rare enough to treat as a defect rather than a strategy.

Reviews are not the whole story

Prominence helps. It does not override a weak category, a wrong address, or a competitor who is simply closer to the searcher.

Worth knowing

Review count was the cleanest correlate we saw.

Traditional page-authority and title-tag scores were inconsistent across the set. That matches what local practitioners have been saying: for YMYL categories, public reviews are one of the few prominence signals Google and AI systems can both see.

The study is the benchmark. The engagement is how reviews get collected without creating a compliance problem.

Common questions

Asked and answered

How many Google reviews does an advisor need?+

Enough to clear the local median. In this set that was about 20 in the pack, with the average much higher. The first ten honest reviews change more than the next fifty.

Does this still apply if my market is small?+

Yes, with a lower bar. In a small city the pack may be won with a handful of reviews if competitors have none. The method is the same: claim the listing, ask after good meetings, keep the NAP clean.
