How to rank in ChatGPT
ChatGPT does not rank pages the way Google does. It selects sources to build an answer from. Getting cited depends on three things: content structured so a passage can be extracted cleanly, authority signals like cited statistics and named expertise, and presence on the third-party sites the model already trusts.
- 01There is no ranking position in ChatGPT. There is only whether you are cited, which means the goal shifts from ranking a page to being the source an answer is built from.
- 02Cited statistics raise citation rates by about 40% and expert quotations by about 30%. Keyword stuffing lowers them by about 10% (Princeton GEO research, 2024).
- 03Brands are roughly 6.5× more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through their own domain. Where you appear matters more than what you publish.
- 04Answers get extracted in passages, not pages. A self-contained 40–60 word answer near the top of a section is the single highest-leverage formatting change available.
Citation is not ranking
The mental model most people import from Google is wrong here, and it leads to the wrong work. There is no position ten to climb from. An answer either names you as a source or it does not.
This changes the economics of being on page two. In traditional search, ranking eleventh is worth almost nothing. In AI search, a well-structured page that ranks eleventh can absolutely be cited, because the model is selecting sources on clarity and relevance rather than reading down a ranked list. That is genuinely good news for smaller firms. Structure and specificity are available to anyone. Domain authority accumulated over fifteen years is not.
What being cited looks like
The same question, asked across Google, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. On Google you are a result among ten. Everywhere else you are either the source the answer is built from, or you are absent.

What the research measured
Princeton's 2024 study of generative engine optimization tested which content changes actually moved citation rates. The results reverse some traditional SEO instincts.

The three levers
Research and observed citation patterns across platforms converge on three things.
- 01
Structure: make it extractable
Models lift passages. Lead every section with a direct answer of roughly 40–60 words that makes sense on its own, without the paragraph above it. Use headings phrased the way people actually ask. Tables beat prose for comparisons; numbered lists beat paragraphs for processes.
- 02
Authority: make it worth citing
Specific numbers with sources and dates, named authors with real credentials, and quotes attributed to identifiable people. Generic assertion is the thing models most reliably skip.
- 03
Presence: be where the model already looks
Citations skew heavily toward third-party sources: industry publications, Wikipedia, Reddit, established review sites. For an advisory firm, a byline in a respected industry publication does more for AI visibility than another post on your own blog.
Make it extractable
The single most common reason a well-ranked advisory page goes uncited is that the answer is not in a liftable form. The model needs a passage it can quote without the surrounding page.
The opening of a page on advisor fees
“In today's complex financial landscape, many investors find themselves wondering…”
Three paragraphs of context before anything a model could quote. By the time the answer arrives, it depends on everything above it to make sense.
“Fee-only advisors charge 0.5–1.25% of assets annually, or a flat $2,000–$7,500 for a plan. They accept no commissions.”
Forty words, self-contained, specific, and true on its own. This is what gets lifted into an answer, with your firm named as the source.
The advisor version
The advisor-specific case is narrower and more winnable than the general one, because the questions are specific and the credible sources are few.
- 01
Answer the questions prospects put to an assistant
Whether they need an advisor at their asset level, what fee-only means, how to evaluate a fiduciary. Each in its own clearly headed section, in a form that survives being lifted out of context.
- 02
Make the entity unambiguous
Consistent naming across the site, complete Organization and Person schema, author pages with real credentials. A firm that is ambiguous as an entity is hard to cite confidently.
- 03
Get published off your own site
For advisors, that means the industry publications your peers already read. One byline there outweighs a dozen posts at home.
- 04
Confirm the crawlers can reach you
The most avoidable failure. If GPTBot cannot fetch the page, ChatGPT structurally cannot cite it, no matter how good the content is.
Check that you are not blocked
A surprising number of advisory sites block AI crawlers in robots.txt, usually because a template or security plugin did it by default. Check yours.

AI crawlers and whether to allow them in robots.txt
#1
most-referenced brand among its competitors in AI answers
The same work that took organic traffic to 5× in under a year, a content audit followed by a focused set of high-intent articles, also made the firm the brand AI systems reach for first in its category. Visibility beyond the ten blue links was a side effect of doing the fundamentals well, not a separate project.

How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?
Structure content so passages can be extracted cleanly, support claims with sourced statistics and named expertise, and build presence on third-party sites the model already trusts. Confirm GPTBot is not blocked in your robots.txt, since that alone prevents citation entirely.
Does traditional SEO help with ChatGPT rankings?
It helps but is not sufficient. The authority and crawlability that drive Google rankings also make you a plausible source. What SEO does not supply is the extractable formatting AI systems need, which is why well-ranked pages sometimes go uncited while lower-ranked, better-structured ones get named.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Faster than traditional rankings, typically weeks to a few months for restructured content on an already-indexed site. Third-party placements can move visibility faster still, because they carry authority you do not have to build yourself.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not for organic citations. Some platforms are introducing separate advertising products, but the sources named in an answer are selected, not sold. Anyone offering guaranteed placement in AI answers is describing something that does not exist.
