How financial advisors show up in AI search

AI search returns an answer, not a list of ten blue links. For advisors that means visibility is whether your firm is used as a source, not only whether a page ranks. Clear passages, named expertise, sourced numbers, and a site the crawlers can read are what get you into the answer.

Key takeawaysUpdated September 2026 · Brent Carnduff
  1. 01The prospect may never click through. Being inside the answer is the new first impression.
  2. 02Traditional ranking still helps. It is not sufficient. Format the page so a passage can stand alone.
  3. 03Author pages, organization schema, and third-party mentions are how a model decides you are a real firm.
  4. 04The commercial page for this work is /ai-seo. The ChatGPT-specific guide is /how-to-rank-in-chatgpt.

What changed for the prospect

People now ask “How do I choose a fiduciary?” and get a synthesized brief assembled from pages the model already trusts. The website still matters; it is often the source being summarized. It is no longer the only surface the prospect sees first.

What being the source looks like

The prospect asks; the model answers with a recommendation and a citation. If your site is vague, unattributed, or blocked, you are not in that brief.

What to change on the page

  1. 01

Lead every section with a direct answer

Forty to sixty words that could be lifted whole. Then the depth.

  2. 02

Name the author and the firm the same way everywhere

Nickname drift is how entities split. Same string on the site, LinkedIn, and every byline.

  3. 03

Put real numbers next to sources and dates

Cited statistics are the single largest measured driver of AI citation. An unsourced claim is a sentence the model skips.

  4. 04

Add FAQ schema for the questions you actually hear

The intro-call questions: are you a fiduciary, what is the minimum, how are you paid. Marked up so the answer is machine-readable.

  5. 05

    Then look off-site

Models overweight publications they have already seen. A Kitces byline or a named case study does more for citation than another unattributed blog post.

Schema, answer-first restructuring, and the audit that shows whether you are already being cited.

Common questions

Asked and answered

Is AI search replacing Google for advisor prospects?+

It is joining it. Half of affluent households still use search engines; a growing share starts in ChatGPT or Gemini. The firms that treat them as one system keep showing up in both.

Can I block AI crawlers and still get cited?+

Not by that crawler. If GPTBot cannot fetch the page, ChatGPT cannot use it as a source. Blocking training crawlers is a separate decision from blocking live search bots.
